Heavensward Monk Guide by Rize

Hello all, i want to introduce myself before i start with this guide. My name is Emanuele, i've been playing MMOs since 2008, started with WoW, and after a few years, i've decided to switch to FFXIV:ARR
After playing Beta with some friends, I started playing competitive really soon.
After leveling all the class to 50, i actually switched to monk and i really started to enjoy it, so i decided to switch it to my main. Unfortunately due to a better group setup im playing ninja atm, but im always watching out for this class, testing rotations and optimization and today im here to share with you my thoughts and conclusions for heavensward.

Opener

I’ve studied many types of openers, but after some test i’ve realized that this one should be the one with the higher potency and sustain.

Pre Pull:

Rotation

The monk doesn't really have a static rotation, because it can change based on if u have to move and eventually stop attack the boss, so here is the priority you will have to follow after the opener:

http://xivdb.com/action/68/Touch+Of+Death Always up on the target, Refresh it at 1-3 second on his duration.

http://xivdb.com/action/74/Dragon+Kick & http://xivdb.com/action/61/Twin+Snakes Always up.

http://xivdb.com/action/66/Demolish Always up, if u never move aways from the boss you should refresh it every 3 http://xivdb.com/status/109/Coeurl+Form

So let’s say that we dont have to move away from the boss for all the duration of the fight, in that case the rotation will be this:

http://xivdb.com/action/66/Demolish The last one of your opener.
http://xivdb.com/action/74/Dragon+Kick
http://xivdb.com/action/61/Twin+Snakes
http://xivdb.com/action/56/Snap+Punch 1st http://xivdb.com/status/109/Coeurl+Form
http://xivdb.com/action/53/Bootshine
http://xivdb.com/action/54/True+Strike
http://xivdb.com/action/56/Snap+Punch 2nd http://xivdb.com/status/109/Coeurl+Form
http://xivdb.com/action/74/Dragon+Kick
http://xivdb.com/action/61/Twin+Snakes
http://xivdb.com/action/66/Demolish 3rd http://xivdb.com/status/109/Coeurl+Form Refresh demolish.

Repeat while keeping http://xivdb.com/action/68/Touch+Of+Death up all the time.

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Aoe Rotation

The AoE rotation is pretty same as the single target one, there is only few small changes:

http://xivdb.com/action/68/Touch+Of+Death Do not use during AoE
http://xivdb.com/action/74/Dragon+Kick and http://xivdb.com/action/61/Twin+Snakes always up on main target
• Every http://xivdb.com/status/109/Coeurl+Form will end in a http://xivdb.com/action/70/Rockbreaker

So lets make an example:

• Charge up Greaser Lightning 3 with a single target rotation
THEN:
http://xivdb.com/action/74/Dragon+Kick
http://xivdb.com/action/61/Twin+Snakes
http://xivdb.com/action/70/Rockbreaker
http://xivdb.com/action/53/Bootshine
http://xivdb.com/action/54/True+Strike
http://xivdb.com/action/70/Rockbreaker
http://xivdb.com/action/74/Dragon+Kick
http://xivdb.com/action/61/Twin+Snakes
http://xivdb.com/action/70/Rockbreaker

And repeat, you can also use http://xivdb.com/action/69/Perfect+Balance and spam http://xivdb.com/action/70/Rockbreaker but i personally only do that on A2 Savage, not on normal doungeons, so i can have always it ready for a boss.

Form Shift & Chakra

What to say about these 2 new abilities, let’s start with http://xivdb.com/action/4262/Form+Shift:

http://xivdb.com/action/4262/Form+Shift is an ability that mades the monk be able to switch to the next form without hitting any target. It takes 1 GCD.
• When to use it? http://xivdb.com/action/4262/Form+Shift is mostly used at the start to charge GL3 faster, so we can engage with http://xivdb.com/action/66/Demolish before the http://xivdb.com/action/69/Perfect+Balance, However we can sometime use it during a fight to maintain GL3 up when we need to go away from the boss.
• When to not use it? sometime when we go away from the boss we don’t need to use http://xivdb.com/action/4262/Form+Shift because not always we need it to mantain the GL3 up on the boss, so we will use http://xivdb.com/action/3546/Meditation

Let’s talk better on when to use http://xivdb.com/action/3546/Meditation:

• Other than having it charged for the pull, sometimes it’s worth to charge it up during the encounter, but when?
• There are 3 situations where you will use http://xivdb.com/action/3546/Meditation:
• 1st Scenario: You will not be in range to keep attack the boss, in this case you will be able to charge from 1 to 5 chakra while getting closer to the boss again without losing GL3, if you will charge 5 chakra but you are still not close enough or the boss is untargettable just form shift till you get into http://xivdb.com/status/109/Coeurl+Form.
• 2nd Scenario: You need TP! As everyone knows there is not only http://xivdb.com/action/3547/The+Forbidden+Chakra that can consume Chakra stack, but also http://xivdb.com/action/3544/Purification that recovers you 300 TP, usually you should not do this in my opinion, the bard should sing enough tp for you and the other melee, but in case u have a lazy bard charge up Chakra and use http://xivdb.com/action/3544/Purification even if u are close to the boss.
• 3rd Scenario: You need TP! But not that much! in this case u can use the http://xivdb.com/action/3546/Meditation GCD to save a small amount of TP, but if the TP is not that bad and http://xivdb.com/?skill/80/Invigorate is almost up, you can replace http://xivdb.com/action/3544/Purification with http://xivdb.com/action/3547/The+Forbidden+Chakra.

Some people were calculating if it is worth to do not open with http://xivdb.com/action/3547/The+Forbidden+Chakra and save the stacks for http://xivdb.com/action/3544/Purification. Honestly i would never do that in the actual content becouse in any of the Savages mode you have little breaks when u can charge mantra again without losing any dps.

Conclusion for these 2 awesome abilities:

• When you have break space in the encounter charge up 5 stack of Chakra then http://xivdb.com/action/4262/Form+Shift into http://xivdb.com/status/109/Coeurl+Form if there is still time.
• If you need TP charge up Chakra without losing GL3 and instantly use http://xivdb.com/action/3544/Purification
• Never, and i repeat, never use http://xivdb.com/action/4262/Form+Shift during the encounter if you can keep GL3 up without that.
• When you charge up Chakra just to wait the cooldown of http://xivdb.com/?skill/80/Invigorate you can use http://xivdb.com/action/3547/The+Forbidden+Chakra instead of http://xivdb.com/action/3544/Purification , but remember that this move have to be used only under the effect of http://xivdb.com/action/85/Blood+For+Blood, http://xivdb.com/action/59/Internal+Release and http://xivdb.com/?item/12622/Draconian-Potion-of-Strength at the same time, unless there is gonna be a break point where you can charge the stacks again.

Perfect Balance

http://xivdb.com/action/69/Perfect+Balance have always been the most useful spell to charge up our GL3, and is still like this on Heavensward, so why im writing a section dedicated to it if nothing changed?
In some fight like A3 savage you are gonna use http://xivdb.com/action/69/Perfect+Balance to charge up GL3 only 2 times: At the start and when add phase begins, that means that we can use it 1 or 2 more times in the fight to boost our damage.

How to use http://xivdb.com/action/69/Perfect+Balance to boost our damage:

The perfect time to use it is after refreshing http://xivdb.com/action/74/Dragon+Kick, http://xivdb.com/action/61/Twin+Snakes and http://xivdb.com/action/66/Demolish on the Target.

So on a normal rotation it should be like this:

http://xivdb.com/action/53/Bootshine
http://xivdb.com/action/54/True+Strike
http://xivdb.com/action/56/Snap+Punch
http://xivdb.com/action/74/Dragon+Kick
http://xivdb.com/action/61/Twin+Snakes
http://xivdb.com/action/59/Internal+Release
http://xivdb.com/action/66/Demolish
http://xivdb.com/action/69/Perfect+Balance
http://xivdb.com/action/54/True+Strike
http://xivdb.com/action/54/True+Strike
http://xivdb.com/action/3543/Tornado+Kick
http://xivdb.com/action/56/Snap+Punch
http://xivdb.com/action/56/Snap+Punch
http://xivdb.com/action/56/Snap+Punch
• Return to normal priority rotation ( DK up, TS up, ToD and Demoish)

This way u will lose http://xivdb.com/action/74/Dragon+Kick a bit on the boss, but it will increase a lot your dps overall in anyway thanks to http://xivdb.com/action/3543/Tornado+Kick.

When to not use http://xivdb.com/action/69/Perfect+Balance this way:

• When http://xivdb.com/action/59/Internal+Release is not available.
• When you know that you will lose GL3 at some point on the fight due to mechanics and you want it to be up.
• When your next 3 attacks on the boss will not be http://xivdb.com/action/74/Dragon+Kick, http://xivdb.com/action/61/Twin+Snakes and http://xivdb.com/action/66/Demolish
• When http://xivdb.com/action/68/Touch+Of+Death is 10 or less second on his timer, make sure to refresh it before the next http://xivdb.com/action/74/Dragon+Kick so it wont affect the time you lose http://xivdb.com/action/74/Dragon+Kick and will not made you drop http://xivdb.com/action/61/Twin+Snakes

Thanks to this use of http://xivdb.com/action/69/Perfect+Balance you will make a bigger use of http://xivdb.com/action/3543/Tornado+Kick other than as a finisher, and this will increase your dps.

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Fists

Even if everyone know how to deal with these stance, i’ve decided to add few tips that might help the less experienced monks.

http://xivdb.com/action/63/Fists+Of+Fire

• This is the buff that you will use the most, it increase damage dealt by 5%
• Aim to have it up 100% of the time.

http://xivdb.com/action/60/Fists+Of+Earth

• This buff reduce the damage taken by 10%
• Switch to hit for big hits if you have weakness, or if some mitigation is gonna be missing.

http://xivdb.com/action/73/Fists+Of+Wind

• This buff increase your movement speed
• Avoid to use this fists. Any use of this will be a dps lose without any gain.

Sometime you will have to use http://xivdb.com/action/85/Blood+For+Blood while a big hit is coming.
Sometime you have to hold http://xivdb.com/action/85/Blood+For+Blood when a big hit is coming. Since fists are oGCD you can switch from http://xivdb.com/action/63/Fists+Of+Fire to http://xivdb.com/action/60/Fists+Of+Earth just for 1 GCD to take the big hit, and then switch back to http://xivdb.com/action/63/Fists+Of+Fire so you don't need to hold http://xivdb.com/action/85/Blood+For+Blood.

Example for A3 Savage:

In this fight the Aoe hit from the boss that require to hold http://xivdb.com/action/85/Blood+For+Blood is http://xivdb.com/?skill/3838/Cascade, here is how to do the fist switch when you know that cascade is about to being cast:

http://xivdb.com/action/4855/Cascade cast start.
http://xivdb.com/action/53/Bootshine (depending where you are on the rotation)
http://xivdb.com/action/60/Fists+Of+Earth
http://xivdb.com/action/54/True+Strike > http://xivdb.com/action/4855/Cascade cast end.
http://xivdb.com/action/63/Fists+Of+Fire
• Continue with your rotation

This will not always guarantee you to survive because the damage you take will still be increased by 15%, but after a bit of practice you will get used to it and you will learn when to do it and when not.

3.0 Stat weights

These stat weights are not calculated by me, but from iDervyi (on reddit), and might not be 100% accurate, but this is for sure something that we can use to have an ideas about monk stat priority.

WD: 12.668
STR: 1.000
DET: 0.176
CRT: 0.228
SS: 0.137

For whoever needs a better explication:

WD: Weapon Damage
AP: Attack Power (Strength for Monks)
DET: Determination
CRT: Critical Hit Rate
SS: Skill speed

Based on this we can go on to 3.2 Best in slot.

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

3.2 Best in Slot

I’ve actually made a BiS list for 3.2, this might not be 100% accurate, but it’s for sure a good base to start with.

BiS Link: http://ffxiv.ariyala.com/TQ15
Based on stats weight should be this:

WD > STR > CRIT > DET > SKS

Lore Items:

http://xivdb.com/item/14404/Augmented+Hellfire+Mask+of+Striking 495 Lore
http://xivdb.com/item/14439/Augmented+Hellfire+Sabatons+of+Striking 495 Lore
http://xivdb.com/item/14460/Augmented+Primal+Ring+of+Slaying 375 Lore
http://xivdb.com/item/14455/Augmented+Primal+Bracelet+of+Slaying 375 Lore
http://xivdb.com/item/14445/Augmented+Primal+Earrings+of+Slaying 375 Lore

Total Cost: 2115 Esoterics
Time Needed: 5 weeks

You can choose beetwin these foods depending on which turn you are playing:

http://xivdb.com/item/13742/Steamed+Staff
http://xivdb.com/item/12856/Baked+Pipira+Pira
http://xivdb.com/item/12855/Grilled+Sweetfish

I would suggest to rush the left side pices left because of the accuracy, it should be also the biggest dps increase thanks to the double materia slots, Right after u can go for the accessory, but in case u are not yet clearing A8s and you are not close to it you can also change few melds with accuracy and use http://xivdb.com/item/14411/Augmented+Hellfire+Mail+of+Striking in the meantime.

Also remember that after 7 weeks of A8 Normal mode you will be able to buy the http://xivdb.com/item/14313/Hellfire+Claws that will be still an huge improvment before the A8s weapon, so remember to save the Lore for this.

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

3.0 Accuracy Caps

These caps are mostly been made from test during the previous weeks of clears, and are not extremely accurate, but i’ve always had 0 misses following this.

Macros

I personally don’t use any type of macro, since they made you lose dps because of the macro latency, but there are the ones i think you could use to improve communication with the party members.

• Pull macro, we need at least 10~ seconds on a pull macro.
/p ---- Pull incoming ----- <se.7>
 /p 10 <se.5> <wait.1>
 /p 9 <se.5> <wait.1>
 /p 8 <se.5> <wait.1>
 /p 7 <se.5> <wait.1>
 /p 6 <se.5> <wait.1>
 /p 5 <se.5> <wait.1>
 /p 4 <se.5> <wait.1>
 /p 3 <se.5> <wait.1>
 /p 2 <se.5> <wait.1>
 /p 1 <se.5> <wait.1>
 /p Pull <se.5>

• Mantra
 /macroicon “mantra”
 /ac “mantra” <me>
 /p Mantra UP <se.1>

• Remove Blood for Blood
/macroicon “Blood For Blood” <me>
 /statusoff “Blood for Blood” <me>

• Army’s Paeon request!
/macroicon "Army's Paeon"
/p <se.1> Army's Paeon Or Goad Please! <se.2>

There are many other macros that can be used, but as i said before they made you a lot of dps compared to these ones, so i’m not gonna write those since i don’t want to stimulate players to use macros that destroy their performance instead of improving it.

Conclusions and A3 savage PoV

In conclusion, even if the monk is not the best choice in an end game party, cause of the major utility given by the ninja’s trick attack, we have to consider it a viable class for any of the current savage floors, expecially after the buffs it got in 3.2.
In this guide, i’ve tried to gather all the experience and the testing i’ve made with this class so that any of the monks can get benefit from it.
If you have any question, or if you want to give any advice or tip about any of the guide section, feel free to comment below and i will reply as fast as i can and eventually update the guide.

Since i'm Italian on this guide there might be few English mistakes, if you guys notice any mistake feel free to comment and i'll make sure to fix it!

Thank you for reading the guide, and don’t forget to have fun every-time you play this game!
